Module 5: Journal of Connections to My Professional Community

Journal of Connections to My Professional Community I have no idea how to maintain image quality on Blogspot... my (readable) screenshots from my PLC can be found on this Google Doc ! Journal #1 November 17 th , 2020 I spent some time further examining my chosen PLC platform, and actually noticed that a lot of the discussion boards and groups that I had looked at were fairly inactive! There tended to be contributions every 2-3 weeks, rather than daily posts and comments. I realized that the regular levels of engagements in the groups that I had looked at would not really work for this module task, which is a bit more time sensitive. Unfortunately, all of my requests to join some of the private discussions (which had a few more members than most groups) have not been approved, so I decided to be a bit more ambitious and create my own group in hopes of facilitating some engagement that is directly related to curricular design. I decided to make the guiding questions related to the pandem...

Module 4 – Foundations and Principles in My Context of Practice

Foundations and Principles in My Context of Practice    Journal Entry #1 November 10 th , 2020   When I first started looking for a professional learning community, I wanted to look for PLCs related to teaching Visual Arts, which relates directly to my current teaching context – teaching AVI 2O1 virtually. I did a brief search online and found one promising organization – the Ontario Art Education Association (OAEA) ( https://ontarioarteducationassociation.org/distance-learning/ ). This organization seems to be the leading PLC for Visual Arts teachers in Ontario, and looked intriguing. It was also highly regarded by my department head, as the annual conference is upcoming. However, I was dissuaded by the membership fee. My department head also sent an email out later today, stating that she would like to form a PLC for Virtual Visual Arts Teachers in our school. Given this, I think that I will wait to gain more insight into our school’s PLC, as it will be directly related...

Extension Work Blog Post

Hello all,     In order for our viewers to distinguish work completed in Module 2 from new concepts implemented in Module 3, we highlighted titles in our slides and flowchart in  orange .     May and I wanted to continue our visual representation to showcase the relationships of different philosophical foundations, curriculum conceptions, curricular designs and align them the newly acquired concepts in Module 3 including planning, instruction, and assessment.  As educators, we often use a variety of assessment practices; hence, we also delineated information on assessment purposes, measurements, interpretations, and uses for the various curricular designs. Furthermore, we implemented examples of videos on curricular designs to showcase our understanding of the variations of teaching models of instruction. Viewers can discern which model they align closely with!     Here is a list of changes for Module 3:   1. Guiding Questions (slide 2) ...

Collaborative Visual Blog Post

Using Canva as our digital platform, May and I created a visual representation to showcase the relationships of different philosophical foundations, curriculum conceptions, and curricular designs. Collaboratively, we thought of three guiding questions which helped to focus and organize our big ideas on the different relationships.   The questions are as follows: What is curriculum and its purpose?  How does philosophy connect with curricular conceptions? How do curricular conceptions dominate curriculum designs? There are also curriculum considerations that we have addressed such as scope, sequence, continuity, and integration. Different curriculum conceptions influence curriculum designs including subject-centered, subject-processed, learner-based, and society culture. Finally, at the end of the flowchart and slides, our takeaways have addressed and responded to our earlier guiding questions. We hope that we have succinctly delineated the relationships between the key ...

Conceptions of Curriculum

Various conceptions of curriculum continue to be used over time or are considered to be mainstream approaches, while others are not. These conflicting ideas surrounding curriculum have led to changes in dominant approaches and the evolution of curriculum over time. As a fairly new teacher, I have always heard my seniors talk about “the Harris years” and its impact on education in Ontario, so I had a limited understanding of the role of politics in the development of curriculum. In my educational program, I was always taught to follow the curriculum precisely, but I now have a deeper understanding of the role of inquiry and reflection in understanding the complexity of curriculum and how it changes over time. Al-Mousa (2013) states, “curriculum development and changes are based on understanding the foundations of the desired curriculum” (p. 21). The different conceptions of education emerge through a consideration regarding the desired content, goals, and organization that educational p...
