Collaborative Visual Blog Post

 

Using Canva as our digital platform, May and I created a visual representation to showcase the relationships of different philosophical foundations, curriculum conceptions, and curricular designs. Collaboratively, we thought of three guiding questions which helped to focus and organize our big ideas on the different relationships. 
The questions are as follows:

  1. What is curriculum and its purpose? 
  2. How does philosophy connect with curricular conceptions?
  3. How do curricular conceptions dominate curriculum designs?
There are also curriculum considerations that we have addressed such as scope, sequence, continuity, and integration. Different curriculum conceptions influence curriculum designs including subject-centered, subject-processed, learner-based, and society culture. Finally, at the end of the flowchart and slides, our takeaways have addressed and responded to our earlier guiding questions. We hope that we have succinctly delineated the relationships between the key components and core concepts of Module 2.

With these inquires in mind, we have constructed a hybrid flowchart along with slides to present how each component is interconnected and interwoven.  From the beginning, we have addressed the two contrasting philosophical foundations - traditional and contemporary.  These two overarching philosophies branch off into four types of educational philosophies: perrenialism, essentialism, progressivism, and reconstructionism. These educational philosophies are linked to different conceptions of curriculum which include academic rationalism, technological conceptions, humanistic, and social relevance reconstruction.

    I want to start by commending you on creating a very clear visual representation of the conceptions of curriculum, philosophies of education, and conceptions of curriculum. I appreciated how your visual flowchart was easy to follow and understand. One aspect of your work that really stood out to me was your use of guiding questions. I think these guiding questions were very useful to orientate the reader and to help organize the big ideas from your slideshow. I also appreciated the takeaways you added at the end of your slideshow. This really helped to communicate the interconnectedness between the conceptions of curriculum, philosophies of education, and conceptions of curriculum. I also found that these takeaways were an effective way to bring the reader back to the guiding questions from the beginning of your slideshow.

Hello all,     In order for our viewers to distinguish work completed in Module 2 from new concepts implemented in Module 3, we highlighted titles in our slides and flowchart in  orange .     May and I wanted to continue our visual representation to showcase the relationships of different philosophical foundations, curriculum conceptions, curricular designs and align them the newly acquired concepts in Module 3 including planning, instruction, and assessment.  As educators, we often use a variety of assessment practices; hence, we also delineated information on assessment purposes, measurements, interpretations, and uses for the various curricular designs. Furthermore, we implemented examples of videos on curricular designs to showcase our understanding of the variations of teaching models of instruction. Conceptions of Curriculum

Various conceptions of curriculum continue to be used over time or are considered to be mainstream approaches, while others are not. These conflicting ideas surrounding curriculum have led to changes in dominant approaches and the evolution of curriculum over time. As a fairly new teacher, I have always heard my seniors talk about “the Harris years” and its impact on education in Ontario, so I had a limited understanding of the role of politics in the development of curriculum. In my educational program, I was always taught to follow the curriculum precisely, but I now have a deeper understanding of the role of inquiry and reflection in understanding the complexity of curriculum and how it changes over time.
